            SUMMER 
              INSTITUTE: 
              EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE FOR INQUIRY-BASED SCIENCE COLLEGE STUDENT CALL 
              FOR PARTICIPATION 
              
            Hampshire 
              College is looking for science pre-service teachers, education majors, 
              or other college students interested in educational technology to 
              participate in a summer institute with 2001-2002 academic year follow-up. 
              The goal of the NSF-funded project is to develop software and curriculum 
              for inquiry-based science education, specifically in botany, biology, 
              and ecology. We have completed development of "SimForest," a simulation-based 
              inquiry learning environment. We will be working with both in-service 
              middle and high school teachers and college students to test and 
              improve the software and accompanying curriculum in classroom contexts. 
              Students will be remunerated for their participation in a week long 
              summer institute, and for participation during the following academic 
              year. 
            
              Deadline for Applications: April 22, 2001. 
              Notification of Acceptance: April 29, 2001 (or earlier if 
              needed). 
              
              SUMMER INSTITUTE JULY 16-20, 2001: Familiarization with the 
              SimForest software and its use within a classroom setting, planning 
              for academic year in-class trials.

              Stipend: $325. (Additional preparation and follow-up pre 
              and post workshop also required. Students interested in **additional

              APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS 
              Commitment to participation in summer institute, follow up meetings, 
              and to-be-negotiated time working in the high school or middle school 
              class (assisting in teaching or recording research observations.) 
              
            
              APPLICANT PREFERENCES 
              Have experience using computers (familiarity with educationl software 
              is a plus). - Have some familiarity with botany, ecology or related 
              science field. - Must be able to provide your own transportation 
              to the necessary meetings.
